Artist Statement:

The “Hung” painting was originally created to function as the packaging artwork for a keychain design I made a couple years ago, but when I see it now, the painting has become more than just packaging.
I first created the “Hung” keychain design as an attempt to integrate a string and clasp mechanism to a sculpt of my character. Most keychains simply screw the string into the top of the design, but I wanted to find a way to incorporate this mechanism into the finished product. Turning the string into a noose simply complimented the self destructive narratives I’m best known for.
When I painted the packaging artwork, I simply worked off a photo reference of the finished sculpture, but seeing it now, I feel like there’s more to it than just my character being hung from a noose. Obviously there’s the shock of seeing my character participating in a suicidal(?) act, but his forlorn expression seems to tell more. It suggests a sense of resignation or maybe a coming to terms with his situation.
At the same time, I feel like the image asks more questions than it answers. Why is he being hung? Was this done to him, or did he do this to himself? Why does’t he look dead or like he’s being asphyxiated?
Despite being the creator of this painting, I’m still not sure how to answer these questions, but I’m hoping the audience can answer whatever questions they might have for themselves.
